Mark 5:1-20 tells the story of a man whose life was dominated by power of the Evil One. His life was characterized by chaos, isolation, and torment. He lived among the tombs and was uncontrollable and broken. Everyday his life was filled with mental, emotional, and physical pain! But when Jesus arrived, despite his overwhelming desperation, the tormented man immediately recognized the authority of Christ and bowed down before Him. The legion of demons within him could not resist the power Jesus’ commands. Jesus delivered the man from the grip of Satan! Afterwards he was seen sitting, clothed, and in his right mind! Wow! what a difference
What stands out in this passage is the man’s refreshingly obedient response following his deliverance. After Jesus restored him, the man’s first instinct was to follow Jesus. Yet, Jesus instructed him to go home and share the story of God’s mercy and transformation with others. Rather than insisting on his own desires, the man obeyed Jesus without hesitation! He became a powerful witness in the Decapolis. It means he literally went throughout the region and told everyone about Jesus and about his deliverance! His obedience flowed naturally from his gratitude to Jesus for his deliverance and freedom.
Obedience to God often means surrendering our own plans in favor of the path He has laid out for us. The formerly demon-possessed man didn’t just obey—he did so with enthusiasm, sharing the good news with everyone, and “everyone was amazed.” This story reminds us that true transformation is accompanied by refreshingly obedient hearts, ready to testify to God’s mercy and power.
As you reflect on this passage, consider where God may be calling you to obedience. Is there an area of your life where you’ve experienced His deliverance, but now need to step forward in obedience—even if it means sharing your story or serving others in unexpected ways? May your obedience, like the man’s, be a testimony to the greatness and mercy of God, inspiring amazement and hope in those around you.
