Exodus 2:1-10 tells the remarkable story of Moses’ birth and the faith-filled actions of his family. In a time of danger and uncertainty, Jochebed (Moses’ mother) courageously obeyed God by protecting her son even when she could not foresee the outcome. Her obedience is the first lesson of trusting the providence of God. Always obey God first. When Pharoah said the child must be destroyed, Jochebed decided to obey God! No matter the circumstances, our commitment to God’s commands must be first and unwavering. There are times when we must obey the authorities, but there are times when we must disobey them! Always obey God first!
The second lesson of trusting the providence of God is when we trust God’s providence, we give Him the opportunity to work! When Moses’ mother placed him in the basket and set him afloat on the Nile, she entrusted her son to God’s care. By letting go and trusting God, she made space for Him to work in ways she could never have imagined. Trusting God’s providence means believing that He is at work even when we cannot see the whole picture.
Finally, the third lesson on trusting the providence of God is that God’s plans are better than ours. The outcome of Moses’ story was far beyond what his family could have hoped for. Notice closely what God did! Moses was rescued. Then, he was returned to his mother, and she was paid to take care of him! (Isn’t that just like God!) Later, Moses was sent into Pharaoh’s household; the man who sentenced him to death! Moses was protected and educated in Pharoah’s household and was trained to lead God’s people! When we surrender our plans and desires to God, we give Him the opportunity to shape our lives for His greater purpose. I am reminded of what Paul said (Ephesians 3:20-21), “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond what we ask or think to Him be glory forever and ever Amen!”
